Is Kratom Addictive?

Man rests head in hands while sitting on bed, wondering if kratom is addictive

Kratom is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. It belongs to the coffee family and is scientifically known as Mitragyna speciosa. Known for its medicinal properties, kratom has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. You may have spotted signs for kratom in your local gas station or heard about it from a friend. But what exactly is kratom, and why has it become so popular in recent years? Is kratom addictive?

Evoke Wellness at Miramar’s kratom detox center in South Florida helps patients safely withdraw from kratom addiction. Call us at 866.931.9312 to start your recovery journey.

What Is Kratom?

Kratom, scientifically known as Mitragyna speciosa, is a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. Also known as biak, ketum, or kakuam, kratom trees mainly grow in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Myanmar. The leaves of the kratom tree are dark green and glossy and are typically dried and made into a fine powder for consumption. Kratom has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat various health issues, such as pain relief, diarrhea, coughing, and fatigue. The leaves also contain compounds that can have mind-altering effects. In the United States, kratom is not a controlled substance and is often marketed as a dietary supplement. However, the safety and effectiveness of kratom for any use are yet to be established.

Is Kratom Addictive?

Is kratom addictive? Kratom interacts with opioid receptors in the brain, much like morphine or codeine. These interactions can lead to feelings of euphoria and reduce pain sensation. Due to these effects, there is a growing concern about the potential for kratom addiction.

Regular use of kratom can lead to physical dependence, whereby the body adapts to the drug and experiences withdrawal symptoms when it is not present. Dependence can evolve into addiction when individuals continue using kratom despite its negative consequences, demonstrating a loss of control over their drug use.

Kratom and Opioid Use

People addicted to opioids sometimes use kratom as a substitute for their drug of choice. This is because kratom can produce similar effects to opioids, such as pain relief and euphoria. However, there is not enough research to determine if using kratom as an opioid replacement therapy is safe or effective.

Some studies have also found that people who use kratom may be more likely to misuse prescription drugs or other substances.

Kratom Withdrawal

Withdrawal from kratom can be an uncomfortable process, with symptoms mirroring those of opioid withdrawal. These may include:

  • Anxiety
  • Restlessness
  • Sweating
  • Tremors
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Mood swings

The severity and duration of these symptoms can vary based on individual factors such as the duration of use, the amount used, and overall health.

Treatment for Kratom

Treatment for kratom typically involves a medically supervised detoxification process. During this time, patients are gradually weaned off kratom while being monitored for any potential complications. This is followed by therapy and counseling to address the underlying reasons for using kratom and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
