Benefits of Rapid Opioid Detox

Opioid addiction has become an epidemic in this country. Once a person gets addicted to them, it is extremely difficult to get off. The withdrawal symptoms that come with a physical dependence on opioids are debilitating. However, treatment for opioid addiction has come a long way; addicts now have options. One of these options is what’s called a rapid opioid detox.

Benefits of Rapid Opioid Detox

What is a Rapid Opioid Detox?

Rapid opioid detox is a method that usually incorporates either general anesthesia or sedation using high doses of opioid antagonists to detox an individual within 6 hours. In Rapid Opioid Detox, the person is kept sedated to avoid the extreme pain and discomfort that is normally associated with opioid withdrawal.

Once the opioid dependence has been reversed, the patient is given a shot of Naltrexone (Vivitrol) to block the effects of opioids and reduce cravings. The patient is also usually given non-addictive medication detox in South Florida to help with any post-acute withdrawal symptoms, and they are given these same medications to take home. IV Ketamine infusions may be given for pain, depression, and post-acute withdrawal.

The Process of a Rapid Opioid Detox

Using rapid opioid detox methods can get a patient through heavy withdrawal symptoms from opioids in 3 to 5 hours instead of 6 to 7 days. The patient is under sedation during the withdrawal, so they do not feel the debilitating symptoms. The individual may experience some residual withdrawal symptoms, but these will diminish over time. According to the National Library of Medicine:

Ultra-rapid opioid detoxification (UROD) is an increasingly popular technique for detoxifying patients addicted to opiates. This technique aims at reducing not only the duration but also the intensity of withdrawal by using general anesthesia coupled with a naloxone or naltrexone medication. Ultra-rapid opiate detoxification represents a potentially safe and effective treatment for opiate-addicted patients but more rigorous research methods are needed to render this procedure entirely valid. (NLM)

Although rapid opioid detox does reduce the amount of time and intensity of withdrawal from opioids, there are far more risks than benefits associated with this procedure.

Risks and Disadvantages of Rapid Opioid Detox

Rapid opioid detox has also been linked to occasional but very serious side effects. Death and cardiac arrests are two of the most serious. Experts usually agree that the risks far outweigh any benefits. The American Society of Addiction Medicine does not recommend rapid opioid detox.

This method of detox puts a huge strain on a person’s body. For someone that has other underlying medical conditions, it can be really dangerous. Also, rapid opioid detox does not eliminate the withdrawal symptoms from opioids. Some withdrawal symptoms can persist for days after the procedure. If the individual isn’t in a safe environment after this, they have a high potential for relapse. And rapid opioid detox can make mental health disorder symptoms a lot worse.

Addiction to any substance is not a quick fix. It requires a formal treatment program to avoid relapse and maintain abstinence. Also, most people with substance abuse disorders have an underlying mental illness. Going to a traditional treatment program gives the individual tools to use to live a life without drugs, and the ability to have any mental health disorders treated.
