What Is Trauma?
Trauma is a complex response to life-threatening situations. Whether someone witnesses a life-threatening event or their own life is under threat, the brain releases chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol. This causes the body to go into fight, flight, or freeze mode in order to survive. Unfortunately, the body doesn’t always process these chemicals during the event.
If the chemicals like cortisol and adrenaline aren’t processed, they are stored in the body. Trauma therapists believe traumatic memories are stored in the body’s tissues, not just the brain. They refer to this as trauma “trapped” in tissues, waiting to release and process. These chemicals lead to frequent traumatic responses and PTSD. Symptoms of unprocessed trauma include:
- Anger
- Aggression
- Reactive behavior
- Unexplained guilt
- Shame
- Feeling unsafe
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Self-isolation
- Nausea
- Confusion
- Mood swings
- Self-medicating
- Paranoia
- Shaking
- Flashbacks
- Fast heart rate
- Panic attacks
- Disorientation
- Nightmares
- Sound sensitivity
- Light sensitivity
- Worry
Everyone’s trauma responses and triggers are unique. However, there are some common triggers, including loud noises, bright lights, intense stress, and certain smells. When trauma is triggered, the nervous system becomes dysregulated. Once triggered, it’s hard to calm down the nervous system and return to a state of calm. Prolonged stress and continued exposure to traumatic events through work, recurrent disasters, or abuse can cause symptoms to worsen. Because trauma education is relatively new, many people may not understand their own behavior or how to ask for help.
Trauma Therapy Programs for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Untreated trauma can affect overall mental and physical health. It can also lead to self-medicating and self-soothing with substance abuse. Trauma therapy can help. At Evoke Wellness at Miramar, we use approaches like eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), meditation therapy, and trauma resolution therapy to help patients process stored trauma, reduce triggers, and thrive no matter their trauma history.
Like other types of therapy, trauma therapy programs helps patients meet small and large goals, understand behaviors, and release past harm for improved health. Because everyone’s life experience and trauma are unique, our trauma therapy program provides highly individualized treatment and therapy.
